Overwhelmed? This will help!

“I know you can feel overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?”

– Quote taken from the movie Ten Things I Hate About You

We tend to feel overwhelmed more frequently than we feel underwhelmed.  This can create a lot of stress and lead to unhappiness.

Here are 3 steps to help you go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling like you can make it through the day, or even life.

1.  Write everything you need to do on a piece of paper

The act of writing something down on a piece of paper takes it out of your head and transfers it somewhere else.  Now,  all the things floating around in your head become real because you can see it.

It is easy to assume that you might write it down and forget about it.  However, I’ve noticed the exact opposite happens … I tend to get have a stronger desire to complete each task.

This step is to clear you mind and allow for instant relief.  If you don’t believe me … try it.

My to do list. Funny how "Work Out" is not prioritized.

2.  Take a few minutes and  be still

Now that everything is out of your head and on paper,  take a few minutes and be still.  Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax.

By taking a few minutes to be still,  your body and mind will have a chance to refocus and re-energize.  When you open your eyes you will be ready to tackle the list.

Before proceeding to step 3,  take 2 seconds to say, “Thank you for today.”  It is always to be important to be thankful for today.  It reminds us that we each serve purpose.

3.  Look at your long list of things and pick 3 things to do

It could be 3 small things, it could be 3 big things… just pick three.  How you decide is entirely up to you.  If one of those 3 things is a BIG project,  break it down into smaller chunks.  It will feel less overwhelming when you see it’s individual parts.

By focusing on 3 things,  you will be able to concentrate and produce quality output.  When you are thinking about too many things at once,  each thought suffers and you risk confusing ideas or performing  at a mediocre level as opposed to an excellent level.

Concentrate and devote all your energy to those 3 things.  You will find that you will  complete things faster and more efficiently.

Sometimes,  after you identify 1, 2, and 3 … you will want to identify 4, 5, and 6!  If not, don’t sweat it … one step at a time. 🙂

TA DA!! You’re ready for the day!

I recommend doing this every morning.  It will help you start each day fresh and calm.

I hope this helps bring you closer to your happiness and your dreams!

just me,

Cat
